Exotic Pet Veterinary Care in Pune β€” Rabbits, Birds, Turtles & More

One of the very few clinics in PCMC with dedicated equipment and clinical experience for birds, rabbits, turtles, reptiles, and small exotic mammals.

Why Exotic Pets Need a Specialist

Exotic animals are not small dogs. Their anatomy, metabolism, disease patterns, and response to anaesthesia are completely different from cats and dogs β€” and most general veterinary clinics in Pune simply don't have the training, equipment, or experience to treat them safely.

At Shivraj Pet Clinic & Lab, Dr. Pritesh Vidhate has extensive clinical experience treating exotic pets including rabbits, birds, turtles and small mammals. With hands-on experience treating hundreds of exotic patients every year, we use species-appropriate gaseous anaesthesia, species-specific diagnostic protocols, and individualized treatment plans for every exotic patient.

Animals We Treat

🐰 Rabbits β€” GI stasis, dental disease, neutering/spaying, respiratory infections
🦜 Parrots & Birds β€” African Greys, Macaws, Budgies, Cockatiels, Finches, Lovebirds
🐒 Turtles & Tortoises β€” Shell infections, metabolic bone disease, Vitamin A deficiency
🦎 Reptiles & Iguanas β€” Skin infections, nutritional disorders, parasite treatment
🐹 Hamsters & Gerbils β€” Wet tail, overgrown teeth, cheek pouch impaction
🐾 Guinea Pigs β€” Dental malocclusion, scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency), skin conditions

Services for Exotic Pets

  • Health Checkups β€” Species-specific wellness exams, weight monitoring, behavioral assessment
  • Diagnostic Testing β€” In-house blood panels, X-ray, ultrasound adapted for small exotic patients
  • Nutritional Guidance β€” Correct diets for each species (most exotic pet illness is diet-related)
  • Surgical Procedures β€” Rabbit neutering/spaying with safe gaseous anaesthesia, abscess drainage
  • Grooming & Maintenance β€” Beak trimming, nail clipping for birds; dental filing for rabbits
  • Disease Treatment β€” GI stasis in rabbits, egg binding in birds, shell rot in turtles
  • Emergency Care β€” Exotic animals can deteriorate rapidly; we attend urgent cases during clinic hours

Common Conditions We Treat

  • GI Stasis in Rabbits β€” The most common life-threatening rabbit emergency. Gut stops moving. Immediate treatment required.
  • Egg Binding in Birds β€” Female birds unable to pass an egg. Painful, rapidly fatal without veterinary intervention.
  • Shell Rot in Turtles β€” Bacterial or fungal infection of the shell, often secondary to poor housing conditions.
  • Metabolic Bone Disease β€” Calcium deficiency in reptiles and turtles from incorrect diet or lighting.
  • Wet Tail in Hamsters β€” Severe diarrhea, often fatal within 48 hours without treatment.
  • Dental Malocclusion in Rabbits & Guinea Pigs β€” Overgrown or misaligned teeth causing inability to eat.
  • Avian Respiratory Disease β€” Breathing difficulties, tail bobbing, open-mouth breathing in birds.
⚠️ Exotic pets hide illness: By the time a rabbit, bird, or turtle shows obvious symptoms, the condition is often serious. If your exotic pet seems quieter than usual, eats less, or sits in a corner β€” that's enough reason to call us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to anesthetize a rabbit or bird for surgery?
Yes, when done correctly with gaseous anaesthesia and species-specific protocols. We use safe inhalation anaesthesia β€” the same approach used in specialist exotic animal hospitals. Injectable-only anaesthesia is far riskier in small exotics, and we avoid it.
My rabbit hasn't eaten in 12 hours β€” is that serious?
Yes. Rabbits that stop eating for more than 6–8 hours can develop GI stasis, which becomes life-threatening within 24 hours. Call us immediately if your rabbit stops eating or producing droppings.
Can you treat my turtle for shell problems?
Yes. We treat shell rot, soft shell (metabolic bone disease), and shell injuries. We also provide advice on correct housing, UVB lighting, and calcium supplementation to prevent recurrence.
My bird is sitting fluffed up at the bottom of the cage β€” what should I do?
This is a serious warning sign. Sick birds hide illness until they can no longer compensate. A bird sitting low and fluffed is often in respiratory distress or severely ill. Call us immediately.
Do you neuter rabbits in Pune?
Yes β€” rabbit neutering (castration for males, spaying for females) is one of the procedures Dr. Pritesh performs regularly using gaseous anaesthesia. Spaying is particularly important for female rabbits because over 80% of unspayed females develop uterine cancer by age 5.
